Business Intelligence DBA

Location: Winnipeg, MB

The Business Intelligence DBA (database analyst) is responsible for transforming WCB operational data into information that is stored and managed utilizing WCB data warehouses. The Business Intelligence DBA will lead the data warehouse solution design, development, and implementation including Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) BI Semantic Models, Extract/Transform/Load (ETL), and OLAP development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to standards and frameworks for data modelling, data integration/ETL and reporting and ensure these are being consistently used in the design and development of all relevant solutions;
  • Work with relational and multidimensional database schemas, designing and building OLAP (online analytical processing) cubes, writing queries and designing reports;
  • Install and configure a database management system (DBMS), preferably Microsoft SQL Server;
  • Use SQL Service Integration Services (SSIS) to implement complex normalization and transformation logic to load data into a data warehouse from disparate data sources;
  • Work with SQL Server Analysis Services;
  • Use SQL Reporting Services (SSRS) to create interactive, tabular, graphical, or free-form reports from relational, multidimensional, or XML-based data sources; and
  • Develop SQL data warehouse with metadata-driven mapping to support customer analysis capabilities.

Minimum Relevant Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Information Technology or equivalent experience paired with at least five (5) years of experience as a BI Database Analyst preferably building and designing data warehouses; and
  • Advanced experience and knowledge of MS SQL, DAX/MDX programming.

Minimum Required Skills

  • Knowledge of Microsoft BI Semantic Model vision and tools such as PowerPivot, PowerView & PowerQuery; MS Azure and Power BI and operating systems, networking software, and data security in general;
  • Knowledge of role-based access control and token-based authentication in a Microsoft environment;
  • Knowledge of Team Foundation Server (TFS) and agile software release practices;
  • Strong analytical skills and experience are required for the tasks of troubleshooting a data warehouse server and carrying out data warehouse design;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Good interpersonal, teamwork, organizational, and facilitation skills; and
  • Strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Microsoft Certified Solution Associate (MCSA) for SQL 2008 or 2012, Microsoft Certified Solution Expert for Business Intelligence (MCSE BI) or Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA).
